Cycle tourism is a niche market with considerable potential growth. The total estimated expenditure for the year ending December 2010 by domestic overnight, daytrip and international overnight visitors that participated in cycling in Victoria is $362 million. The estimated total expenditure of cycle tourists in Australia is approximately $2.4 billion (including domestic overnight, daytrip and international overnight visitors that participated in cycling as an activity).
This plan aims to assist Victoria's cycle tourism industry to leverage Victoria's Nature-based Tourism Strategy and continue to build strong consumer demand for cycle tourism experiences.
One of the challenges facing Victoria's cycle tourism sector is the lack of economic analysis and research. However, available research demonstrates that cycle tourism has the potential to deliver tourism growth for regional Victoria and to stimulate regional and rural economies, particularly as cycle tourists stay longer and do more when travelling.
