VicHealth developed the Streets Ahead program in 2008 to build on the successes of the Walking School Bus (WSB) program. The program encourages kids to use their own legs and wheels for short local trips – and travel by car less – by encouraging them to walk, cycle, skate or run to school and other local destinations.

VicHealth committed $1.7 million over three years to support Streets Ahead. Six local councils received funding to develop demonstration projects focused on particular neighbourhoods within their municipalities:
– City of Greater Bendigo
– Brimbank City Council
– Cardinia Shire Council
– Darebin City Council
– City of Greater Geelong
– City of Wodonga
A brochure has been produced which explains the Streets Ahead program in more detail, including what the evidence tells us and ideas for taking the first steps. It has been designed to provide inspiration and information for the councils pioneering Streets Ahead as well as the parents and representatives of schools and community groups who make up the councils' action committees.
