This report, released by the US Safe Routes to School in 2011, provides a compendium of projects and practices in the Safe Routes to School Program. The Program was established in 2005 to encourage more children to walk and cycle to school and includes both infrastructure and non-infrastructure components.

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) legislation passed in 2005 required all states to create and fill a State SRTS Coordinator position to oversee the implementation of each state’s program.
This guide is intended to provide examples of noteworthy SRTS program practices and management approaches. Noteworthy practices range from innovative ways to work with advocacy groups to streamlining authorisation for projects.
The guide includes an overview of how states have structured the program and then examines:
● Outreach and Education
● Project Selection
● Project Implementation
● Project Closeout
