Map of Cycling Rates for Shorter Journeys in the Netherlands 2004-08 (EU)

The data for this map came from the Netherlands Mobility Survey. Of all journeys in the Netherlands 26% of people use a bicycle. In some municipalities, such as  the islands of Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog, more than 50% of journeys under 7.5km are made by bicycle. In the cities of Zwolle, Groningen and Leiden around 46% of people use bicycles for shorter journeys.

The map data is published as part of a national atlas of health and was compiled in April 2011. The atlas recognises that besides physical aspects such as height and city size, the difference in bicycle use is due to policy-related factors, road safety and infrastructure. The website is in Dutch.
