Designing Places for Active Living (Aus)

In June 2010 the NSW Premier's Council for Active Living (PCAL) released a series of resources to support state government agencies, local councils and the development industry, to build environments that support active lifestyles.

Resources include:

Online Planning and Design Guidelines

This resource is divided into seven design focus areas:

For each focus area, there is a design objective, some important design considerations and links to key references and additional resources for detailed design guidelines and specifications. The resource is desogned to be  useful to a wide range of practitioners in local and state government, private consultancy, the development industry and other design and health professionals. Such users may include town planners, traffic and civil engineers, road safety officers, community safety officers, architects and urban designers, developers and local government councillors.

Development & Active Living: Designing Projects For Active Living
A Development Assessment Resource & Navigational Tool | 3.06 MB PDF

This report has two principal purposes:
1. To assist Councils (and the State Government) with the preparation of Active Living policy documents, such as Development Control Plans (DCPs), or to address Active Living principles in their existing policies. This would provide an improved legal basis for addressing Active Living matters at the DA/Project stage.
2. In the absence of such policy provisions, to advise consultants/applicants and Assessment Officers (at the State and Local level) on matters for consideration, and design and siting action that will promote Active Living in
development proposals.

Development & Active Living: Designing Projects For Active Living
Developer’s Checklist with Case Studies | 1.16 MB PDF

This document is a companion to the Development Assessment Resource & Navigational Tool. The tool allows developers to self assess their developments and provides a useful starting point for discussions with Consent Authorities about how Active Living has been incorporated in the formulation of development proposals.
