Enforcement & Road Safety
Research in road safety generally eventually leads to better safety campaigns and products which will save lives. While this is also true of specific research in cycling safety, much less is known about the topic.
Estimating Potential Effect of Speed Limits, Built Environment, and Other Factors on Severity of Pedestrian and Cyclist Injuries in Crashes (Canada)
06th Feb 2012
Road facilities in urban areas are a major source of injury for nonmotorized road users. This study found that for cyclists vehicle movement and whether the accident occurred at a signalized intersection had significant effects on the severity of injury. This research report was published in the journal Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board in December 2011.
Road safety education best practice (UK)
18th Jan 2012
This report, released in Feb 2011 by the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) provides advice and guidance on best practice in road safety education. The best practice review incorporates UK and international literature assessments, telephone surveys with UK public sector and professional judgement.
Understanding the Relationship between Drivers and Cyclists (Australia)
22nd Dec 2011
This report, released in August 2011, documents a research project that investigated the extent of the tensions between cyclists and drivers and then takes the first steps to uncovering the components of these tensions. The report suggests that the levels of tension in the driver-cyclist relationship occur in the context of a society as a whole which is exhibiting behaviours and creating situations that are likely to increase tensions in all walks of life.
Infrastructure and cyclist safety (UK)
02nd Dec 2011
This literature review, undertaken by the UK's Transport Research Laboratory was released in November 2011. It considers the role of infrastructure in relation to the safety of cyclists and their interaction with other road users. Of all interventions to increase cycle safety, the strongest evidence is for the benefits resulting from reduction in the general speed of motorised traffic.
Incidence Rates of Pedestrian and Bicyclist Crashes by Hybrid Electric Passenger Vehicles (USA)
25th Nov 2011
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a report in October 2011 that updates a 2009 study on the incident rate of hybrid electric (HE) vehicles being involved in crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists compared to pedestrian and bicyclists’ crashes involving a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE). According to the report, overall, the odds ratios indicate that the odds of an HE vehicle being in either a pedestrian or bicycle crash are greater, 35% and 57% respectively, than the odds of an ICE vehicle being in a similar crash.
The relative contribution of system failures and extreme behaviour in South Australian crashes (Australia)
11th Oct 2011
This research report by the Centre for Automotive Safety Research, Adelaide was released in August 2011. Within the road system, there are compliant road users who may make an error that leads to a crash, resulting in a ‘system failure’, and there are also road users who deliberately take risks and display dangerous or ‘extreme’ behaviours that lead to a crash. Crashes resulting from system failures can be addressed through improvements to road system design more readily than crashes resulting from extreme behaviours.
Heavy Vehicle Road Safety: Research Scan (Australia)
11th Oct 2011
This Research Scan, by the Centre for Automotive Safety Research, Adelaide was released in July 2011. The number of registered heavy vehicles (HV) in Australia has risen 22% since 2005 and, with the national freight task projected to double by 2030, the number of HVs on Australian roads is set to continue to increase. In the 12 months to the end of June 2010 crashes involving heavy vehicles resulted in 239 fatalities while around one third of all work-related road crash fatalities occur within the freight industry. Heavy vehicle safety for both the trucking industry and the general community remains an important issue.
Strategies for Reducing Pedestrian and Bicyclist Injury at the Corridor Level (USA)
22nd Sep 2011
In July 2011 the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) released a report exploring the development of methods for identifying sites where there is potential for significant reductions in pedestrian and bicyclist injuries.
Injury Prevention Through School Connectedness (Aus)
05th Aug 2011
This research report by the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety – Queensland was released in April 2011. The resesarch study examined how students' feelings of being personally accepted, respected, included, and supported by others in school influenced injury rates. The study observed a decrease in bicycle related injuries among intervention school students, compared with a slight increasing trend in bicycle injuries among control students.

28th Jun 2011
This Austroads Research Report, released in June 2011, looks at the type and frequency of errors made by drivers.
Pedestrian fatality risk as a function of car impact speed
28th Jun 2011
This research, by Erik Rosen and Ulrich Sander, was based on a large in-depth, pedestrian accident study. The results show lower fatality risks than generally reported in traffic safety literature.
Bicycle Helmet Research CARRS QLD
23rd Jun 2011
This monograph by the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) presents the results of research commissioned by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to review the national and international literature regarding the health outcomes of cycling and bicycle helmets and examine crash and hospital data.
Impact of compulsory cycle helmet legislation on cyclist head injuries in NSW
23rd Jun 2011
Scott R. Walter, Jake Olivier, Tim Churches and Raphael Grzebieta
This study, released in June 2011, aims to assess the effect of compulsory cycle helmet legislation on cyclist head injuries given the ongoing debate in Australia as to the efficacy of this measure at a population level.
