End of Trip Facilities

Cycling, especially for work trips, often requires a variety of end of trip facilities. A growing number of workplaces are providing enclosed bicycle parking, showers, lockers and change rooms, in an effort to encourage staff to ride to work.

Transport hubs and significant destinations, such as central business districts also offer an opportunity to provide end of trip facilities to encourage cycling.

The following set of documents outline important features of end of trip facilities as well as best practice case studies:

Are Cycle Centers Effective Transport Interventions? (Australia)

06th Feb 2012

This research evaluates the King George Square Cycle Center in Brisbane. It found mst users were men in white-collar jobs. The report was published in the journal Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board in December 2011.

EcoCycle Stores Bikes Underground

19th Jan 2011

Allison Arieff, January 12, 2011, GOOD - Design

Cities across the country are seeing a dramatic rise in the number of bike riders on their streets (28% in New York City last year, for example). But with that good news comes the unfortunate fact of a corresponding rise in bicycle theft. Lacking the art and pathos of Italy's cinematic classic, The Bicycle Thief, the experience of getting one's wheels stolen is not only expensive, it's utterly depressing.

GreenTRIP

11th Jan 2011

GreenTRIP is an innovative new certification program that rewards residential in-fill projects that apply comprehensive strategies to reduce traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. Projects meeting GreenTRIP certification criteria provide appropriate amounts of parking and incentives for new residents to drive less and own fewer vehicles.  By creating less driving and using less land for parking spaces, there’s also more space for shops, services, and affordable homes.
