Maps

Maps can make a bicycle journey safer and more enjoyable by helping to choose a smarter route. An increasing number of maps are available, specifically designed to assist bicycle riders find bicycle paths, on road bicycle lanes and public transport links.

Adelaide Bikedirect Bicycle Maps (Australia)

The South Australian Government has produced 14 cycling maps covering the Adelaide metropolitan area from Gawler in the north to Willunga in the south and from the coast to the hills. Bikedirect is a network of bicycle routes across the Adelaide metropolitan area that was developed to encourage cycling. The Bikedirect maps provide options for people with different needs and abilities and show main roads, bicycle lanes, local streets and off-road paths.

Map of low-traffic streets in Madrid (EU)

In November 2011 the website Enbicipormadrid.es released a complete map of low-traffic zones in Madrid. The map is the product of a year of research and development and contributes to making the city more accessible by bicycle.

Auckland cycling maps (New Zealand)

In September 2011 Auckland Transport issued a new Central Auckland cycle map. The map includes new cycle infrastructure completed since 2008. Auckland Transport has five cycle maps which will all be updated.  

Sydney Cycling Guide and Maps (Australia)

The City of Sydney have produced a suite of maps for city bicyclists. The maps and ride guide are freely available and distributed via cafes and retailers throughout the CBD and inner suburbs. 

Western Australia Bike Maps (Australia)

The WA Department of Transport has published online the Perth Bike Map Series and recommended ride guides for Perth and regional WA with a special section of Mountain Bike trail maps.

Edinburgh Innertube Cycleways Map (UK)

The Edinburgh Innertube Cycleways Map was launched in February 2011 and by the start of June, 25,000 copies had been distributed and as many copies again downloaded. The design is inspired by the London Underground and charts Edinburgh's cycleways in a clear, easy-to use map.

Bike Riding in Victoria Map Set (Australia)

Suitable for all riders, these detailed maps outline the magnificent network of paths, cafes, picnic areas and tourist destinations that Victoria has to offer. The maps are sold by Bicycle Network Victoria and were mapped by Explore Australia.

Northern Territory Cycling Maps (Australia)

The Department of Lands and Planning manages and maintains an extensive arterial (main road) network of cycle paths across the Northern Territory. Their cycling website has links to cycling maps for Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

Darwin City Council Making Tracks Map (Australia)

Darwin City Council, in conjunction with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and the City of Palmerston, publishes a Cycle Map for Darwin/Palmerston. The Making Tracks map shows the location of bicycle paths along with recreational facilities and activities.

Canberra and Queanbeyan interactive cycling and walking map (Australia)

TravelSmart Victoria Maps (Australia)

Since 2004, TravelSmart has been working with Melway, local Councils, Metlink and universities to produce and distribute pocket-sized sustainable transport maps for urban and regional areas. TravelSmart maps are based on a traditional Melway map base; however, the colours are altered to highlight walking, cycling and public transport routes above the arterial road network and other car-based information.

Adelaide Cycle Instead Journey Planner (Australia)

The online Cycle Instead Journey Planner generates cycling routes using Adelaide's Bikedirect network of main roads, bike lanes, local streets, off-road paths and some unsealed paths. This interactive tool allows you to choose a variety of options that take into consideration fitness and confidence levels, road conditions and speed of travel.

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Maps and Route Finder (USA)

The San Francisco Bike Map & Walking Guide shows existing bike routes, paths, and bike lanes, and indicates the grade of a street so you can avoid the steep hills. The map is published by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Their website has links to maps of the surrounding areas and their online route finder BikeMapper.

Inner Melbourne TravelSmart Map (Australia)

The Inner Melbourne TravelSmart Map was re-released in August 2011. TravelSmart maps are based on a traditional Melway map base; however, the colours are altered to highlight walking, cycling and public transport routes above the arterial road network and other car-based information. Information panels are tailored to the local area and cover subjects such as walking clubs, bicycle user groups, public transport ticketing information and special events.

Google Maps: Bike There (USA)

In Oct 2010 Google Maps added a 'Bike There' feature for 150 American cities. This video shows how the system works and the link provides further information about the initial and ongoing development of the tool.
