CYCLING fashion has moved on from lurid Lycra emblazoned with the names of races the wearer is unlikely to ever participate in.

So says style-conscious cyclist Lara McPherson, who is one of the organisers of Bike Runway, a fashion parade of cycle wear that will feature amateur models riding their bikes on a catwalk of sorts.

''The best bicycle style is on the street - you never see it in a fashion shoot,'' says McPherson, who commutes from Port Melbourne to the city on two wheels each day.

''We arranged Bike Runway to call attention to the fact that you don't have to be decked out in Lycra.''

The event promoting ''the art of fashionable riding'' is part of Melbourne Bikefest, a celebration of all things bicycle-related that includes picnics, rides, design competitions and a market.

McPherson said local designers had cottoned on to the popularity of cycling and some were embracing bike-friendly fashion. The event's sponsor, Levi's, had its own commuter range.

Cyclists with a sense of style will be able to participate in the fashion parade for a $5 entry fee.

Fashion-conscious cyclists have to balance style with practicality, says McPherson. Workwear remained tricky for female cyclists, especially skirts.

''I try to be mindful of what skirt I'm wearing and whether people on the other side of the lights can see my underwear,'' she said.

''You want stretchy skirts that are comfortable and there is a perfect length - not too short so you flash but not too long to get caught in chains.''

Another consideration for cyclists is avoiding sunburn. ''There are some pretty bad tan lines out there,'' she said.

The month-long Melbourne Bikefest begins on Friday and Bike Runway will be held on March 15 at 1000 £ Bend, 351 Little Lonsdale Street.
