  • Representations of cycling in metropolitan newspapers - changes over time and differences between Sydney and Melbourne, Australia
Rissel C, Bonfiglioli C, Emilsen A, Smith BJ. BMC Public Health 2010, 10:371.
Over the past decade there has been an increase in the reporting of cycling in the major newspapers in Sydney and Melbourne (from 106 in 1998/99 to 169 stories in 2007/08), with a significant increase in reporting of cycling in Melbourne, from 49 to 103 stories (p = 0.04). Recent reporting of cycling was generally positive (47% of articles, compared with 30% of articles which were negative) and focused on benefits such as health and the environment. Three quarters of negative stories involved injury or death of a cyclist. The Sydney based The Daily Telegraph reported the most negative stories (n = 60). We found positive framing of 'cycling' was more widespread than negative, whereas framing of 'cyclists' was more negative than positive.

Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW).  The promotion of bicycle usage - which produces no air pollution and noise and is as well health enhancing through the physical activity – has a high significance for the Austrian government. The new Austrian Government Programme foresees to promote cycling as a healthy and environmental-friendly form of transport. The overall aim is to double the share of bicycle transport to reach 10 % on a country-wide average until 2015. Furthermore the Austrian “Climate Strategy” and the “Programme of Options between Federation and Federal states for PM10 reduction” as well as the CEHAPE aims suggest bicycle transport as a very important measure to promote physical activity and simultaneously to reduce air-pollution (and noise, traffic jams, space consumption, energy consumption etc). To fulfill these programmes the BMLFUW developed a “Masterplan Cycling” in September 2006. With this Masterplan the positive effects of everyday cycling for environment and health shall be gained by promotion of cycling in various fields.

This goes double for women, who might find that riding in high heels is easier than walking in them; a special wardrobe is not necessarily required (though fun); and that biking boosts a sense of freedom in ways a car no longer can. Benefits to women are multiple, and the benefits to society are just as big. Read on for how we all get dividends when women take to their bikes.

Federal lands, including units of the National Park Service, National Forests, National Wildlife Refuges, and Bureau of Land Management lands, are at a critical juncture. Increasing numbers of automobiles in some areas have led to congestion, poor air quality, damage to natural resources, and degraded visitor experience. At the same time, growth in the number of bicyclists on some of the most scenic roadways has led to motorist–bicyclist conflicts and concern for everyone’s safety. Increased fuel costs and climate change have spawned efforts to reduce fuel consumption and minimize the "carbon footprint" of Federal land agencies. Sixty-one percent of adults in the United States are overweight or obese and childhood obesity rates are soaring (U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services, 2006). Non-motorized transportation and recreation networks are one part of the solution to these issues.

I know, I know. In spite of what we've said, the helmet debate will never be over - it is paper versus plastic all over again, except with the added fear factor of saving (or not) the contents of your precious brain if your head is involved in an accident. Whatever you decide to do helmet-wise, don't let it stop you from riding! Safety for cyclists increases when there are more of us out there cycling. So for city riding, why not at least consider these five reasons to wear?

It's nice to know that daring designers like Riding Pretty's Shelly Shroeder are out there finding ways other than plastic flowers and stickers to transform bicycle fashion. Shroeder's video is from last year, and is a prototype - since then she's done to-order helmet covers that harken back to the days when women riding bikes tended to swathe themselves head to toe to ride. Shroeder keeps coming up with new implementation of her helmet covers like the rain-proofing version above. She's also got a blog to talk about bicycle fashion and its lack.

Beautiful and bicycle helmet seems like an oxymoron but here's proof that it doesn't have to be. With Bike to Work Days being celebrated, pretty cycling hats likes these prove there is no excuse not to wear one with pride in front of your fellow workers and bikers. They are designed by an eco-conscious Japanese-born designer who got fed up with looking terrible on her bike so she created her own collection of helmets that are funky and still meet all the safety requirements. The helmets are factory-made and decorated with carefully chosen feminine, delicate colours and have "diamond" trimmed chin straps. The designs are cleverly positioned on the back and on the left-hand side so drivers and pedestrians can admire you as you go. Helmets are available in a full range of lovely colours and there is a "designer" label on the back of each one.
