Education: Adults

Bicycle education, like driver education, is an important component of any comprehensive strategy to encourage cycling. Bicycle education can increase safety levels by helping riders become aware of their responsibilities as road users. Education sessions can also teach valuable lessons on riding skills, bike maintenance as well as being a venue to meet fellow riders. The following documents provide an overview of bicycle education for adults:

  • Is 10 Hour Course for Cycling Police a Waste of Tax Money?
Sami Grover, 24 March 2010, USA: TreeHugger - Cars & Transportation (bikes)
Cops and bikes are a great mix. OK, so not every cop hands out bike helmets and hugs, but simply putting cops on bikes has been shown to cut crime and save gas. But now one police force has run into trouble by decreeing that no officer can patrol by bike until they have undergone ten hours of cycle training. Is this health and safety gone mad, or a sensible precaution to ensure cycle safety?

Since the wild expansion of New York’s system of bike lanes under Mayor Mike Bloomberg, there has been a considerable increase in the amount of cycling. The bike lanes have made cycling considerably safer, especially in physically-separated lanes that have opened in the past year on 8th and 9th Avenues and most recently on Broadway.
